Suffolk’s Safety Tree saw another holiday season filled with green lights, symbolizing that there is no loss of life from a traffic fatality during the 2022 holiday season.
Located at Elk’s Lodge on 329 W. Constance Rd,, the Pilot Club of Suffolk places their safety tree annually to promote safe driving awareness for the city of Suffolk during the holiday season.
“All the lights on the Safety Tree were green the entire month of December, signifying a safe month of driving by the motorists of the City of Suffolk,” said Pilot Club of Suffolk President-Elect Leah Powell. “Our prayers were answered — no red lights on the tree. Therefore, we hope everyone has had a very safe Christmas and Happy New Year.”
Likewise, both 2020 and 2021 saw the Safety Tree filled with green lights with 2022 continuing the tread.
Powell explained how the tree works to bring awareness on driving safely during the hecticness of the holidays.
“Our thoughts are that if the tree is up there and everyone sees it. Everyone will keep it in the back of their minds to stay safe the entire year,” she said.
Noting that the tree was donated by the Knights of Columbus group as well as continuous support from the Elk’s Lodge and Suffolk Police, Powell is grateful for the continued support of the city and the success of the tree.
“Thank you for all the work you’ve done for us,” Powell expressed.
