New moon, new you, night hike at Lone Star Lakes Park

Get a close-up view of January’s new moon and more in the sky during an upcoming night hike set for Lone Star Lakes Park.

Suffolk Parks and Recreation and the Back Bay Astronomers Club are sponsoring the program from 8-9:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20, according to a news release.

This program is a one-mile hike on the Archery Range Trail and a telescope viewing highlighting the new moon, visible galaxies and other star clusters that will be taking place throughout the night.

Officials said there will be a focus on astronomy and additional information on the nocturnal wildlife we encounter along our hike. Participants are encouraged to dress warmly. Flashlights and telescopes will be provided.

The program is $10 per person. Advanced registration is required and can be completed online at registerpkr.suffolk-va.net/ or at East Suffolk Recreation Center, 138 South 6th Street, Suffolk, VA 23434. Limited slots are available.

This program is open to all ages. An adult must accompany children under 16 years old.
