There is something for everyone slated for the week ahead in the City of Suffolk. Events on tap include range from exercise, technology, art, literature, Pickleball and more.

Suffolk Parks and Recreation released a list of events that run from the end of January into the first several days of February:

 

Monday, January 30

Active Adult Senior Program

Calling all active adults for a senior program featuring fun activities, games. This program is at both East Suffolk Recreation Center and Curtis R. Milteer, Sr. Recreation Center.  East Suffolk Recreation Center is located at 138 S. 6th St.  Program is held 10 a.m. to noon Monday – Friday. Curtis Milteer Center is located at 132 Robertson St.  Program is held from 10 a.m. to noon Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Programs are for those age 55-plus. and are free with an active annual membership. Lunch is served daily to qualified participants 60-plus for a $2 donation. Tech Explorers: Squishy Circuits [in-person]

Explore technology with hands-on, tech-based crafts. This month, they’re using squishy circuits. Registration required. For elementary ages. Event is from 4-5:30 p.m. at Morgan Memorial Library. Senior Aerobics

East Suffolk Recreation Center s offering senior aerobics. This class is for an hour, 10-11 a.m. and will focus on floor aerobics that may help to increase mobility, balance, strength and flexibility. Classes are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays for ages 55-plus. Cost is $12 for six weeks (12 classes); $2 drop-in rate. Call 757-514*4500 for more information.

Dungeons & Dragons [IN-PERSON + LIVE]

Ready to take on the demogorgon and fight the mouthbreathers? Meet new people and forge your own collective stories with them. Teens and adults of all skill levels are welcome. Registration required. The city’s Dungeon leads the fifth edition D&D one-off sessions. The DM is joining the session virtually. A TV will be set up at North Suffolk Library for in-person participants. Event is from 4-6 p.m. For questions about the campaign, email jhanes@suffolkva.us. The program is using Discord for live participants. Participants must be 13 and older to create a Discord account and need an Internet-connected device and microphone, but do not need a webcam. Registered participants provide their email address to receive the Discord link at least 15 minutes before the program begins. It is recommended players create a free D&D Beyond account. Brand new players can use D&D Beyond for basic rules and ideas for characters.

Exhibit of Excellence: Suffolk Student Art 2023

The Suffolk Art League, in cooperation with the Suffolk Fine Arts Commission, presents the Exhibit of Excellence: Suffolk Student Art 2023. For more information about entering this exhibit call the Suffolk Art Gallery at 757-925-0448.

 

Wednesday, February 1

Art Workshop with the Suffolk Art League [in-person]

Join the Suffolk Art League and branch out art practice at the Suffolk Public Library. All supplies are provided and no experience is necessary. For adults.  Registration is required through the Suffolk Art League website. Battle of the Books: Ice Cream Social [IN-PERSON]

An ice cream social is planned for those participating in Battle of the Books (BOB) this year. Meet other BOB participants and try making ice cream, just like they do in Place at the Table! Hammer Time!

Before the sun rises, get a jump start to the day with a great HIIT workout. This is a full body blast that is sure to make each person’s entire day. Poetry, Prose and Pizza

Line Dance Class

Come out and learn exciting line dances. Classes are set to the latest R&B music; it’s a great way to relieve stress, exercise and most of all, have fun. Classes 6-7 p.m, Mondays and 11 a.m .noon Thursdays at the East Suffolk Recreation Center. Cost is $20 for six weeks; $4 drop in rate. Ages 17-plus. Pickelball

Pickleball is back. Not familiar with Pickleball? It is the hottest new game sweeping the nation. Pickleball is a combination of tennis, Ping-Pong, racquetball and badminton. The game is played on a badminton sized court with the net lowered to 34 inches at the center and uses light paddles and plastic perforated balls. Played as singles or doubles, it is easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players. In addition to being fun, the game has developed a reputation for its friendly and social nature. This is a great activity for active adults who want to keep moving and have fun! Adult Pickleball is played from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays at the East Suffolk Recreation Center, 138 South 6th St. It’s free to play. All those playing need is a current and valid annual recreation center membership.

Busy Babies [in-person]

Come for a morning of busy, messy, sensory fun at this baby-friendly event, and meet other littles in the area. Please dress babies in clothes parents wouldn’t mind getting dirty. For birth through age 3. Drop in anytime between 10:30-11:30 a.m. No registration required. The event is at Morgan Memorial Library.
