Sunday morning two-vehicle crash kills one, injures two others

A Sunday morning collision on in the area of Route 17 and Route 164, Western Freeway, in Suffolk resulted in one fatality and two other injuries.

Suffolk Emergency Communications was notified of a crash at 10:56 a.m. Sunday, April 9.

Suffolk Police said the initial call reported that an SUV had left the roadway and, after striking a guardrail, traveled through a median and into oncoming traffic.  The SUV, occupied by two individuals, struck a sedan, occupied by one individual, that was traveling on Bridge Road that had just exited from SR 164.

Upon preliminary investigation, it was determined that only two vehicles were involved, police said in a news release. The crash caused the roadway to be closed for an extended period.  

All of the occupants of both vehicles were transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries. One of the drivers later succumbed to their injuries. The accident is still under investigation.  All lanes of travel are back open.
