Phillip Johnson, 73, passed away at home with his wife by his side on Sunday, April 9, 2023. He was born Jan. 19, 1950, to Jesse J. and Allie Mae Johnson of Chuckatuck. Phil was a 1972 graduate of the University of Richmond Business School.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Carol Bouckart Johnson; children, Jennifer Page Smullen (Dan) and Phillip Taylor Johnson (Nicole); his three precious granddaughters, who he called “my dolls,” Madelyn Page Smullen, Daphne Rose Smullen (Rosebud) and Lucy Mae Johnson; four siblings, Jesse J. Johnson Jr. (Linda), Stephen H. Johnson, Bessie L. Johnson and Kathy J. Bariteau (Peter); and nephews and nieces, Christopher M. Woleben M.D., Jesse J. Johnson III (Mary), Phillip Bariteau (Erin) and Lydia Bariteau. Phil had a special friendship with Mindy Capaldo, who worked for him for over 30 years, and she became family.
Phil was a longtime Senior Vice President of Towne Insurance and was highly respected in his profession. Aside from his love of work, he was an avid golfer and long-time member of Elizabeth Manor Country Club, a hunter, boater and car enthusiast.
The family would like to thank all of their family and friends for their support during his illness. They especially thank the One South Medical Oncology Nursing Staff at Sentara Obici Hospital and Bon Secours Hospice.
A visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 12, at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Bennetts Creek Chapel, North Suffolk. The service will be private. In lieu of flowers, please send memorial donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, CHKD or Bon Secours Hospice.
