Seniors can learn about police in summer academy

Suffolk senior citizens have the unique opportunity for seniors to learn more about the department and improve their personal safety.

The Suffolk Police Department is inviting senior citizens in the local area to participate in its Senior Citizens Academy, set to run from June 7 to Aug. 16, 2023.

During the Academy, students will learn about various topics, such as law enforcement history, driving course demonstrations, crime scene investigations, crime prevention, training simulations and S.W.A.T., according to a department news release. The students also receive an overview of the department, including its assets, capabilities, and personnel. Additionally, they take part in tours of facilities and opportunities for hands-on learning.

The classes are from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesdays starting on June 7 at Suffolk Police Headquarters, 111 Henley Place.

Registration is currently open, and the deadline for applications is May 19. The application process includes a background check for all applicants.
