Whaleyville Boulevard closed due to downed power lines at accident scene

One person is hospitalized in serious condition after a single vehicle accident Tuesday morning in the 6400 block of Route 13/Whaleyville Boulevard.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue and Suffolk Police responded and arrived on the scene at 6:46 a.m. Tuesday, May 9, for reports of a motor vehicle accident with entrapment after the city’s emergency communications was contacted at 6:41 a.m.

Medic 8 arrived on scene to find a single vehicle on its side with one confirmed entrapped patient with down power lines around it, according to a department news release.

On scene crews extricated the patient moments before the vehicle’s engine compartment caught fire. The patient was transported by Nightingale to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in serious condition.

Route 13/Whaleyville Boulevard remains closed in both directions at this time. Virginia Power arrived at 7:33 a.m. and is working to secure and repair the downed power lines so the road can be reopened. It is unknown how long Route 13/Whaleyville Blvd will remain closed, according to the release.
