Prior to Mother’s Day weekend, the Suffolk Sheriff’s Department teamed up with Suffolk Christian Academy and its students to celebrate the moms who reside in the city’s nursing homes.

On Tuesday, May 9, the Sheriff’s Office first stop was at SCA to pick up Mother’s Day cards created by fifth grade students.

Making their deliveries Wednesday, May 10, the Sheriff’s Office made stops at Lake Prince Woods Assisted Living, Concordia Assisted Living, Maryview Nursing Care Center and Autumn Care of Suffolk Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Deputy Major David Miles shared his thoughts on the importance of visiting nursing homes throughout the year, not only on these special occasions.

“Our office has a relationship with the nursing homes in the city and we make it a priority to visit them throughout the year,” Miles said. “Mother’s Day is another opportunity for us to visit the residents.”

SCA students’ work on the greeting cards played a big part in making the visits happen. 

Miles said it provides quite a boost for moms when young people share their talents with others.

“The creativity and genuine caring [that] those cards communicated shows the hearts of the students that made them,” he said. “I hope the kids know that the time and effort they used to create the cards made a lasting impression on the mothers that received them.”

Miles said its their hope the residents will look at those cards and remember that they are still thought of and cared for. 

“Although our office delivered them, the students at Suffolk Christian Academy are the ones that deserve the credit for the amazing cards they created,” he said.
