It was a sunny Saturday filled with owners showing off their spectacular vehicles as the Holland Ruritan Club held its fifth annual Custom Car, Truck and Motorcycle Show held May 13.

Along with door prizes and a disc jockey spinning classic tunes, the show at Holland Village Ball Field 3 drew young and old come out to get a look at vintage-styled cars, as well as other stylized trucks and motorcycles.

Holland Ruritan Club President and Car Show Co-Chair Curtiss Johnson said about 90 cars took part in the show.

“Every year has been better. The word spreads and the people like to come here, we have a lot of people that return each year. And we’re so thankful for that,” Johnson said. “People look forward to it every year, and we’re truly blessed to have this kind of weather here today and this kind of turn out.”

Rob Beckett of Combat Veterans of America Motorcycle Club showed his support for the show and the Holland community by raffling off a ‘96 Wild Ride Motorcycle.

Beckett provided an interesting story behind the bike.

“It was a tribute bike built by a man who lost his brother in Vietnam,” he said, noting he purchased it in 1996. “Unfortunately that man passed away in 2005.”

Beckett described how the man’s daughter “couldn’t part” with the bike. However, he said once she found out about CVAMC and knowing why her father built the bike, she donated it to the club to help raffle off and support the veterans community.

Dennis Quinn received the 2023 grand prize Best in Show for his 1967 Chevelle Super Sport.

Capping off the show was the awards ceremony honoring the “Top 25” cars and the “Best of” winners.

Among the top 25 winners are George DelMoral, Kevin Cooper, Charles Ricks, William C. Bailey, Jr., Mike Okuley, Becky Simpson, Michael Bradley, Allen Minor, Frank Cheery, Buddy Goodwin, Frank Wheatley, Harry Paul, Dave Wray, Chris Hunt, Bobby Heath, Everard Hayes, Joe Hancock, AJ Judy, Ronald Eure and Robert Bradshaw.

The Best of Winners are: Ralph Warfield, Best Display; Alvin Ricks, Best Paint; Michael Adams, Best Engine; Danny Sumpter, Best Interior; Rob Beckett, first runner up Motorcycle; Kevin Cooper, first place Motorcycle; Joe Capanzano, Best Truck; and Dave Hayhurst, Long Distance.

“Well I hope everyone will take away that this is a great fundraiser for a community service organization,” Johnson said during the event. “Because all the proceeds from this car show will go back into the community, and we have several community service projects that we’ve planned that we’ll execute the remainder of this year, and then next year we plan to do the same thing to fund all of those projects.”
