NSA girls tie North Cross in girls tennis meet

Nansemond-Suffolk Academy’s girls varsity tennis team tied North Cross, last year’s state semi-finalist, Friday, Sept. 8, at 4-4 before the meet had to be stopped due to lightning in the area.

NSA was playing without its No. 1 singles and doubles player, Kayla Kosiorek, who was out injured, according to coach Sheryl Raulston.

NSA claimed three of the six singles matches:

  • No. 1 Singles — A.B. Cullen (NC) beat Emma Morgan (NSA), 8-1.
  • No. 2 Singles — Cate Cook (NC) beat Emma Graves (NSA), 8-3.
  • No. 3 Singles — Izzy Rose (NSA) beat Anna Ciccozzi (NC), 8-1.
  • No. 4 Singles — Aubrey Council (NSA) beat MMiaa Flores (NC), 8-1.
  • No. 5 Singles — Paige Dowd (NSA) beat Maddy Dalton (NC),  8-0.
  • No. 6 Singles — Selden Burns (NC) beat Julia Adams (NSA), 8-3.

NSA and North Cross also split the doubles matches as one could not be completed:

  • No. 1 Doubles — Cullen/Cook (NC) beat Morgan/Graves (NSA), 8-3.
  • No. 2 Doubles — Rose/Council (NSA) and Cook/Akali Koeda (NC), unfinished due to lightning.
  • No. 3 Doubles — Dowd/Rylea Nelms (NSA) beat Dalton/Veronica Weston (NC), 8-1.

In match highlights, Paige Dowd had wins in both singles and doubles, and Rylea Nelms had a win in her first starting lineup match, Raulston noted.
