13 year-old charged for Col. Fred Cherry Middle School bomb threat

The Suffolk Fire Marshal’s Office advises that, upon further investigation into the bomb threat at Col. Fred Cherry Middle School on Nov. 1 petitions have been issued for a 13 year-old student at Col. Fred Cherry Middle School for the charge of threat to bomb or damage buildings or means of transportation.

As per the Code of VA Section §18.2-83, for those that are under 15 years of age, this is a Class I Misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail and a $2,500 fine.  If individuals are 15 years of age or over the offense becomes a Class V Felony.

Suffolk Police and Suffolk Fire & Rescue were on the scene of a report of a bomb threat at Colonel Fred Cherry Middle School, located in the 7400 block of Burbage Drive Wednesday, November 1. Suffolk Emergency Communications was notified of the incident by a school administrator at 10:08 a.m.

The school was evacuated and a sweep of the school was conducted by Suffolk Police and the Suffolk Fire Marshal’s Office. No injuries were reported.

No threat was found and the building received the all-clear at 11:15 a.m. at which time students and staff were allowed re-entry into the building.

The incident remains under investigation and there is no further information available at this time.
