Deaconess Hilda L. Abram of South Quay Road peacefully transitioned into eternal rest on Nov. 5, 2023. She was born on Dec. 25, 1930, in the Holland area of Suffolk to the late Joseph and Mary L. Copeland. Hilda was the widow of Herbert Abram.
Deaconess Abram graduated from Nansemond Training School in 1947 and further matriculated at Virginia State College where she was a graduate in the class of 1951. Hilda received her master’s degree from Columbia University in New York City.
Deaconess Abram was a faithful member of Laurel Hill United Church of Christ, where she served on the Deaconess Ministry, Pastor’s Aide Ministry and the Women’s Fellowship. She was also a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. Epsilon Theta Zeta Chapter.
Hilda’s memory will live forever in the hearts of her loving family: one daughter, Nicole Holman of Atlanta, Ga; one son, Zanda R. Abram and his wife, January; brother, Enoch Copeland; six grandchildren, one great-grandchild, nieces, nephews and extended family.
A public viewing will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, at the funeral home. On the day of the service, her remains will rest in church for viewing by 9 a.m. and The Zeta Necrology ceremony will be held prior to the funeral service. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to Herbert and Hilda’s favorite charity, Franklinton Center at Bricks (franklintoncenteratbricks.org). A celebration of love will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 9, at Laurel Hill United Church of Christ, 8001 South Quay Road with the Rev. Andri Knight delivering the eulogy.
