More than 10 agencies, including SFD respond to large commercial fire in Isle of Wight

According to a press release from the City of Suffolk, the Isle of Wight Department of Fire Rescue says the industrial warehouse fire, located in the 20000 block of Isle of Wight Industrial Park Road, Smithfield, was marked under control at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, Jan.18, 2024. Crew will remain on the scene to control hot spots and flare ups which may continue throughout the evening.

Two minor injuries were reported. One civilian and one firefighter were treated on the scene and released.

Due to the various tenants operating businesses within the 23,000 square foot structure, Virginia Department of Emergency Management is assisting in the management of potential of hazardous material runoff and has also determined that there is no risk to the public regarding air quality.

Responding agencies include: Isle of Wight County Fire Rescue, Smithfield Volunteer Fire Department, Carrollton Volunteer Fire Department, Rushmere Volunteer Fire Department, Windsor Volunteer Fire Department, Isle of Wight Volunteer Rescue Squad, City of Suffolk Fire & Rescue, Surry Volunteer Fire Department, Newport News Fire Department, Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) and Virginia State Police.
