Championship Saturday: VHSL concludes Class 5 wrestling championship

Virginia Beach, Virginia — Nansemond River’s Camden Bauswell defeated Riverside’s Nathaniel Harris 6-0 to advance to Saturday’s state championship match to face Cox’s Rudy Wagner.

With Bauswell trailing 6-3 heading into the third period, he scored an escape to pull within one takedown of Wagner. However, with time winding down, Wagner scored a critical takedown and three nearfalls, catapulting Wagner to an 11-5 victory in the 190 pound weight class. Cox High School also hauled in the team championship with 171 points. Independence and Great Bridge rounded out the top three.

As a team, Nansemond River finished in 11th place, with King’s Fork coming in 15th.

Individually, King’s Fork and Nansemond River saw three wrestlers place in the top six of their weight classes.
