The Suffolk News-Herald and its affiliated publications have announced the appointment of Lindsay Richardson as publisher, succeeding Betty Ramsey.

Richardson, currently the regional advertising director for The Smithfield Times, Suffolk News-Herald, The Tidewater News and Windsor Weekly, will retain that role while also moving into the position of publisher of the Suffolk News-Herald.

Ramsey, who has served as publisher since 2020, has been named a vice president of Carpenter Media Group. She will continue to serve as publisher of Carpenter-owned The Farmville Herald, The Charlotte-Gazette and The Kenbridge-Victoria Dispatch.

“Being a part of the Suffolk News-Herald team has been a pleasure and an honor. The commitment this team shows to each other, and the community we serve, is unwavering. Lindsay Richardson brings that same commitment with her. Our readers, customers and The Suffolk News-Herald team are in the best of hands under Richardson’s leadership,” Ramsey said.

The leadership change was announced to employees on Feb. 26 and took effect March 1.

“Lindsay Richardson is exceptionally qualified to succeed our good friend and mentor Betty Ramsey,” said Steve Stewart, president and chief executive officer of Boone Newsmedia Inc. and a former publisher of the News-Herald. “I had the good fortune of hiring Lindsay on our Suffolk sales team a decade ago, and it’s been a joy to watch her professional development over the years.”

Richardson began her career in January 2014 as a marketing consultant serving customers in the northern area of Suffolk and quickly rose to sales manager of the Suffolk News-Herald until 2015, when she relocated to Orlando, Florida, for a short period of time. Richardson returned in January 2018 as a marketing consultant serving the downtown/southern Suffolk area and was again promoted to regional advertising director in January 2020 of The Smithfield Times, Suffolk News-Herald, The Tidewater News and Windsor Weekly.

“Betty Ramsey has been a world-class leader in service to our readers and customers,” Richardson said. “Her leadership and mentorship at the Suffolk News-Herald has developed an exceptionally talented staff, whom I could not be more excited to work with in this role. I am honored to have the opportunity to carry on the tradition and commitment of delivering quality local journalism to the community that I have called home since I was a teenager.”

Ramsey first joined The Tidewater News in 2005 as the advertising director and was promoted to general manager in 2009. In 2010, she was named president and publisher of Tryon Newsmedia, LLC, based in Tryon, North Carolina, an affiliate of Boone Newsmedia, LLC and Carpenter Media Group. Ramsey returned to Virginia in 2017 as president and publisher of Farmville Newsmedia, LLC. She was named group publisher in 2020, where she rejoined The Tidewater News as president and publisher, along with affiliate Suffolk Publications, LLC.
