NSA baseball drops heartbreaker against Cape Henry

Nansemond-Suffolk Academy Saints baseball dropped a heartbreaker to the Cape Henry Collegiate Dolphins 5-4 on Wednesday.

The Saints got off to a hot start in the bottom of the third inning, scoring three runs, but the offense simmered quickly.

Going into the top of the sixth, the Dolphins were down 3-1, after three walks and a hitter batter helped score four runs, putting Cape Henry up 5-3.

Down to the last two outs, Saints Joseph Petry reached first base on a dropped third strike, giving NSA life. The Saints loaded the bases on two walks, and a third sent Petry home to bring NSA within one score. With the count two balls and two strikes, Cole Goodman made contact to center, but Dolphins Andrew Hart was there to make the play.

Cape Henry’s starting pitcher, Tanner Schaebel, pitched four innings with nine strikeouts; however, reliever Ryan Hummel notched the win. Saints starter Matthew Elswick went four and one-third innings, striking out four and giving up just three hits.

The Saints fall to 2-2 on the season and hit the road to face Lawrence Academy on Friday, March 22. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
