Rubble is all that remains of the Carts Unlimited building along N. Main St. The building burned in a Monday fire that took Suffolk Fire and Rescue crews nearly six hours to extinguish. At approximately 10 p.m. Monday, SFR crews were dispatched to the 700 block of N. Main St. in regards to a commercial structure fire. When crews arrived, they found heavy fire and smoke showing from a large commercial building. Fire was visible from the roof, and heavy smoke was emanating from the interior. After searching for occupants believed to be inside the building, an evacuation order was issued.
SFR crews remain on the scene of the fire that destroyed the business and left two people displaced from an apartment upstairs, according to SFR. The residents were home at the time of the fire but were able to exit the structure on their own. No injuries have been reported. The SFR Fire Marshal’s Office will continue to investigate the cause and origin of the fire.
The fire was brought under control just before 4 a.m., but firefighters remained on the scene to extinguish any hotspots. At the time of this report, the area of N. Main St. to the intersection of East Constance Road remains closed.
