Fire crews use SCBA to protect pinned patient in car fire

SUFFOLK, VA — Suffolk Fire & Rescue responded to the 6000 block of University Dr. at College Dr.for an auto accident, with reports of a patient pinned. Emergency Communications dispatched the incident at 01:21 p.m., and the first fire units arrived on the scene at 01:24 p.m.

Crews arrived to find two vehicles upright with obvious front-end damage. One vehicle came to rest beside a traffic light pole and was on fire with a patient pinned inside. Crews placed a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) on the pinned patient to protect them from the hazardous conditions and the difficult extrication. Engine crews were able to keep the fire from spreading into the passenger compartment while ladder crews worked on the extrication. At 01:37 p.m., SFR crews were able to successfully extricate the patient, who was ground-transported to an area hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the other vehicle suffered injuries as well and was also transported to an area hospital
