Many 13-year-olds are asking for Wii game systems — if they don’t already have one — for their birthdays this year.

However, one local 13-year-old corporation is giving them away, instead.

TowneBank is donating Wii game systems to senior homes throughout its service area as part of its celebration of its first teenage birthday.

Chorey Park Apartments, a Suffolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority property on West Constance Road, received one of the gifts. TowneBank employees delivered Wii and Wii Fit Plus game systems on Tuesday, along with several games and a variety of controllers.

“They’re going to love it,” said Joyce Wooden, president of the resident council for the 100-unit building that caters to senior citizens.

About a dozen residents gathered in the community room at the apartment building for the presentation.

“We’re happy to be able to help out with the community and give back in this way,” said Jo Ann Jennings, a payroll specialist with TowneBank.

Jennings said bank employees raised the money for the gifts through donations and participation fees for special activities at work. She said she hopes the gaming systems help the residents better connect with their grandchildren who visit, because it is something they can do together.

Stacie Hogan, a bank officer, said nearly all of the bank’s employees participated throughout the region.

“With birthdays, usually you get things, but as a community-based bank, we’re always looking to give back,” she said.

The residents already have activities scheduled using the Wii, said property manager Theresa Boone.

“It won’t sit on the shelf and be dusty,” she said. “They will use it.”
