NORFOLK — Joe Luther Bond Jr., 61, departed this earthly life Friday, May 28, 2010 after a brief illness at Sentara Leigh Hospital. He was a native of Suffolk, Va., and resided in Norfolk, Va., at the time of his death. He was preceded in death by his father, Joe L. Bond Sr., and his mother, Octavia M. Bond. He was a well-known and accomplished musician in Tidewater and the surrounding areas. He brought peace, comfort, and joy to the lives of many as he played at various nursing homes, churches, concert halls, Frederica’s Restaurant, and the former Waterside Food Court.
Joe, affectionately known as “Butch,” was a 1966 graduate of John F. Kennedy High School. He leaves to cherish his memories: four brothers; Rufus Boyd (Iris), Larry Bond, Ronald Bond, and Bruce Bond; five sisters, Helen B. Lewis, Dorothy Barnes, Beverly Daughtrey, Millicent Cousins (Jerry), Sylvia Bond, and Margaret Goodman (Gerald); and “special devoted mate,” Christina, and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
A graveside funeral was held at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Norfolk on Saturday, June 5 at 2 p.m. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Norfolk Chapel was in charge of arrangements. Online condolences may be offered to the family through hdoliver.com.
