The old adage that everybody can do something is never truer than when it comes to public service.

People with a talent, no matter what it is, can use it in any number of ways to benefit the world around them. Business owners can donate services. People with money can help financially support nonprofit organizations. Nothing is too large or too small when it comes to making the world around you a better place — whether it’s making a large monetary donation or simply picking up a piece of litter and putting it in the trashcan.

The owners and employees of a local barber shop are taking the charge to make a difference to heart. The Chop Shop has bought, renovated and decorated a trailer to use to give free haircuts to children in public housing neighborhoods this summer.

To many kids, a haircut is an annoyance — something to be suffered through when their mother or father takes them to the barbershop or drapes a towel over their neck and snips away. But many parents cannot afford a professional-looking haircut for their young ones.

Therefore, the TCS Boyz, employees of the barbershop, decided to do what they do best and take their talents on the road.

The first location will be at Cypress Manor/Parker Riddick on July 2. Following that, Hoffler Apartments will be done on Aug. 6; Colander Bishop Meadows on Sept. 3; and Chorey Park on Oct. 1, which will be a special visit for the elderly residents.

Only regular haircuts will be done, and children obtaining the haircuts must live in the community. Donations are not required, but any that are received will go toward purchasing school supplies for the annual school supply giveaway at the end of the summer.

The TCS Boyz are doing what they do best to help others. This should be taken as a challenge to everyone to do the same.
