Mrs. Mabel Bremby-Jones departed this earthly life on Tuesday, January 6, 2009 at the home of her daughter, Sylvia Gainey in Suffolk. Born November 22, 1922 in Whiteville, North Carolina, Mrs. Jones was the daughter of the late Sylvester and Geneva Hickman. She was preceded in death by husbands, James H. Bremby, Ernest L. Jones, a daughter, Robena Jones Archer, step-daughters Emma Ferebee, Julia Hawkins, Frances Giles, step-granddaughters Diana Giles and Corlis Giles.
Mrs. Jones retired from the Elliott Hotel in Suffolk and Columbus County Hospital, Whiteville, N.C. She was a member of New Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Whiteville, N.C. and attended Tabernacle Christian Church in Suffolk.
She leaves to cherish her memory daughters, Sylvia Gainey, Christina Norman and Linda Mason, sons Jerome Bremby and Randolph Bremby, brothers Ernest Thorpe (Audrey), Sylvester Thorpe (Vertley), special cousins Ulage McMillian, Mildred Stevenson, Eugene McMillian, twelve grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren, special caregivers Nakita Bailey and Maggie Gay and a host of other relatives and friends.
A funeral will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 10, 2009 by her grandson, the Rev. William O.L. Norman, Jr., in New Mt. Zion Missionaryy Baptist Church, Whiteville, N.C. The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Sylvia Gainey, 2004 Sprucewood Lane, Suffolk. Peebles Funeral Home, and People Funeral Home, Whiteville, N.C. in charge.
