Breaking boards for health

Students of Master Hwang’s World Class Tae Kwon Do have raised more than $20,000 for the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters and participate in a 1,000 board-a-ton each year to break 1,000 boards. This year’s Health Kick fundraiser continues through Dec. 11, when students will participate in the board-a-thon.

Students at Master Hwang’s World Class Tae Kwon Do will be breaking 1,000 boards to help sick children on Dec. 11.

The students are currently collecting funds in any way possible to donate to the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters and will participate in their third annual Health Kick to benefit the hospital.

“Our entire business is constructed around children,” said Melony Hwang, director of Master Hwang’s World Class Tae Kwon Do. “We wanted to give back to the community, and if we’re going to support a business, we wanted it to be something that benefits children in the community. It also serves to pull students together to remind them of the blessings they have and to encourage them that while they’re healthy and strong to give back to those who are less fortunate.”

The event raised $11,000 in its first year. Last year, it raised $12,000.

“We’ve raised more than $20,000 in the past few years and want to continue to break our records,” Hwang said.

Students are tasked with raising funds however they can, from walking door-to-door to asking their parents’ co-workers.

“Some of the ideas the kids come up with are remarkable,” Hwang said. “I’m so impressed with all their hard work and the work their parents are doing to help. One mom put together a ‘jean day’ at her work to benefit CHKD.”

Students who contribute to the donation efforts will help break boards at the 1,000 board break-a-thon on Dec. 11 at the Chesapeake Square Mall 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“It’s our favorite event of the year,” Hwang said. “It’s really a time for the community to come together to help CHKD.”

The business is seeking individual and corporate sponsors to help it meet its goal. Call 774-0445 for more information or visit 3575 Bridge Road to donate to the business’ fund.
