There’s no question that the biggest event in Suffolk each year is the annual Peanut Festival. More than 200,000 people are thought to have attended the event this year alone, and the four days of festival activities provided a long weekend of distraction and entertainment to people of all ages.

But what event qualifies as the second most popular one in Suffolk? The Christmas (uh, Holiday) Parade? Restaurant Week? The Holland Ruritan Club’s Founders Day? Independence Day? The Taste of Suffolk festival?

There’s a pretty good case to be made that none of those events — as popular as they might be — comes close to having the kind of drawing power of Driver Days, which will take place for the 19th year in a row this weekend.

Organizers describe it as a sort of old-fashioned, small-town street fair with the kind of fun and entertainment that might have been typical at such an event in the middle of the last century but is generally unexpected today. There will be Civil War re-enactors, country music performers, hot dog grillers and parade marchers.

Of course, there will be more modern entertainment, as well. From bounce houses to cornhole tournaments to monster truck rides, the evidence is clear that this is one festival committed to remaining fresh and relevant to all generations.

The festival runs from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, with the car show, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, when the poker run and bike show take place.
