Suffolk residents will get the chance to clean out their medicine cabinets and get rid of old medications this month.

The Suffolk Police Department has partnered with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and Virginia State Police in a prescription drug take-back day. The event will be held April 27 at the North Main Street Walmart, 1200 N. Main St., and the Bennett’s Creek Pharmacy, 3219 Bridge Road.

The National Take-Back Initiative Day is an effort to remove potentially dangerous prescription drugs from homes. Keeping unused or expired prescription medications can lead to accidental poisoning, overdose or abuse, according to the Drug Enforcement Administration. Unused prescription drugs should not be thrown in the trash, because they can be retrieved and abused or sold. They also should not be flushed, because they contaminate the water supply, the DEA says.

Over-the-counter substances also can be disposed of during the take-back initiative, according to the city press release. Suffolk Police Department investigators will man the stations, but participants will not be asked for identification or information.

Participants can bring the medication in its original container if all identifying information on the prescription label is removed. They also can be removed from the original container, except for liquid products, which should remain sealed in their original container.

Intravenous solutions, injectable medications and syringes will not be accepted.
