Take a chance for mutts

The weather might seem decidedly uncooperative today, but the forecast is calling for rain to hold off until Monday. That means it should be a fine day to throw on a jacket, leash the dogs and head out to Sleepy Hole Park for Mutt Strut.

The nearly annual event is the biggest fundraiser of the year for the Suffolk Humane Society, and it’s a great opportunity to browse a bunch of pet-related merchandise on sale by vendors and crafters from all over the region, to raise a bit of money for a good cause and maybe even to find your new best friend from Suffolk Humane, the Suffolk animal shelter or one of the other adoption and rescue organizations that are expected to be on hand.

There will be a raffle and a silent auction, and winners could go home with free meals, private dog-training lessons, fitness gift certificates or even tickets to the sold-out Jimmy Buffet show at the Farm Bureau Live amphitheater in Virginia Beach.

Those attending will be entertained by the Flying Jacks dog stunt show, a police dog demonstration, a canine costume contest and a Frosty Paws eating contest, not to mention all the cute dogs roaming the grounds with their owners.

There will also be free pet health screenings, a rabies clinic, microchipping, children’s activities, pet portraits and more. The winners of the Suffolk News-Herald/Nansemond Pet Cremation Services Priceless Pets photo contest will be named, and trophies and prizes will be awarded.

And, of course, there will also be a pledge walk, when people and their pets circle the field in honor of and in support for the good work the Suffolk Humane Society does on behalf of dogs, cats and other animals in Suffolk. That walk will kick off with the Blessing of the Animals.

The day might look pretty bleak, but take a chance and head to Sleepy Hole Park. The show is guaranteed to put a smile on your face.
