Ten adults were displaced after a fire at the Chorey Park Apartments Friday evening.

The first report of the fire was received at 6:23 p.m. Firefighters arrived five minutes later to the five-story apartment building for elderly and disabled residents, which is managed by the Suffolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority.

Firefighters assisted several residents confined to wheelchairs or walkers to get out of the building. Most residents had evacuated prior to the arrival of firefighters, but others remained in their apartments, city spokeswoman Diana Klink said in a press release.

Firefighters went door-to-door to ensure the safety of occupants. One man complained of difficulty breathing and was transported to Sentara Obici Hospital. One female was evaluated on scene for possible smoke inhalation. No firefighters were injured.

Firefighters used the construction of the building to fight the fire, connecting their hoses to water pipes located in the stairwells. A ladder truck was also extended to the roof of the building.

The fire was extinguished by 6:46 p.m., and the actual blaze was confined to the apartment on the second floor where it originated. However, 10 adults were displaced because of extensive water and soot damage to several apartments.

The American Red Cross and the housing authority are providing assistance to relocate the residents.

The cause of the fire still is under investigation, and the fire marshal’s office is working with the Suffolk Police Department.
