Music will once again float across the city on Friday nights this summer as the city’s Parks and Recreation Department puts on the TGIF concert series at Constant’s Wharf Park and Bennett’s Creek Park.

New and returning bands will grace the stages beginning June 21, when Strictly Bizzness opens the series at Constant’s Wharf Park. The concert will double as a business appreciation event hosted by the Suffolk Economic Development Authority.

“We want people to come out for another year of good times on Friday nights,” said Lori Carter of Suffolk Parks and Recreation.

Island Boy, The Janitors and Slapwater, as well as Strictly Bizzness, are TGIF favorites and will return to the series this year. The Fuzz Band is returning to the series for its second straight year. Others are known in the area but haven’t played TGIF in a while or ever before.

The Deloreans, an ’80s show band, are new to TGIF but have played in other Suffolk events like Taste of Suffolk.

The Michael Clark Band has “played for us before, but it’s been a little while,” Carter said.

And a band named Guava Jam will make its first appearance in the TGIF series.

“They have played Peanut Fest before,” Carter said.

The parks open at 6 p.m., and the bands begin playing at 6:30. The events end at 9:30 p.m.

Food and beverage vendors, as well as children’s activities, will be on site. The entire event is free, except for food and drinks purchased. Outside food and drinks are prohibited this year, Carter said.

“We do welcome pets, but they need to be on a leash,” she said. “We also want to remind people to bring a chair and some sunscreen, and probably some bug spray.”

Sponsors this year include Pender and Coward, Monarch Bank, Blair Brothers Construction, Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens, Suffolk Insurance, AT&T, Sasser Construction Waterfront at Bennett’s Creek Park and Home Instead Senior Care.
