Newport News Shipbuilding won FM 99’s “The Yard” Ship Repair Competition on Saturday in Suffolk, earning the right to call itself “The Yard” of Hampton Roads.

The competition, held at the Hilton Garden Inn on East Constance Road, had shipyards throughout the area competing to build ships with only cardboard, box cutters and duct tape. Teams had one hour to construct a life-like vessel that could float and even support additional weight.

Newport News Shipbuilding’s vessel held 344 pounds — which included a human — before it sank. It placed first in that category, as well as in the categories of best resemblance to a naval vessel and smallest amount of visible duct tape.

“There is not enough praise for how well this team performed during the competition,” said NNS team captain Stiles Bliss, an engineering technician in NNS’ test engineering department. “Every member went above and beyond to make this endeavor a success. We put an awesome team together this year that embodied what our shipyard is all about.”

The Newport News Shipbuilding boat mimicked one originally built by the company in 1925 — Hull 282. The real Hull 282 was once used by the U.S. Navy to dredge Subic Bay in the Philippines.

The boat-building competition was part of a community-wide event at the Hilton. Competitors and their families enjoyed food, games and a raffle hosted by FM 99’s Rumble in the Morning team.
