Remove barriers to new roads

To the editor:

This has been a long and harsh winter. Its effect has been more potholes and damage than I remember ever seeing before.

The infrastructure of Hampton Roads is vitally important to our local economy and to the security of our nation. I’m especially concerned, because making our roads safe again is going to cost a lot of time and money.

I recently read a column by Congressman Randy Forbes (“Trading potholes for progress,” March 28, 2014). While I don’t always agree with Congressman Forbes, I think his 414 Plan makes a lot of sense.

We need to remove the unnecessary and burdensome regulations involved in the construction of roads and bridges. This would solve many of our transportation problems faster, create more jobs, and provide incentives for investing in our infrastructure before the problems reach danger levels.
