KFHS figuring things out on track

The outlook is still unclear for the 2014-15 King’s Fork High School indoor track and field team, but two things are certain: youth is abundant, and two experienced girls are looking to shine at states.

King’s Fork High School sophomore Lawrence Smith participates in an exercise designed to increase his flexibility during practice on Thursday. Smith is one of the Bulldogs’ up-and-comers.

King’s Fork’s girls’ team tied Lakeland High School for third in Wednesday’s Ironclad Conference track and field meet at the Boo Williams Sportsplex in Hampton. The teams had 32 points apiece as Nansemond River High School won with 154 points.

The King’s Fork boys’ team took fifth with 15 points, while Lakeland claimed third with 64 points and Nansemond River finished in second with 90.

King’s Fork coach Marvin Ricks evaluated how the season has gone thus far for his team.

“It’s going pretty good. We’ve got a very young team, so everybody’s getting used to the whole swing of things,” he said. “We’ve had a couple meets, but we haven’t been taking our whole team to all the meets.”

Wednesday’s conference meet was the third event of the season featuring King’s Fork as a team and was meant to help the school’s athletes shake off the Christmas break rust and get back in training mode.

“We actually did pretty good,” Ricks said, citing improvement in times.

One of the foremost standouts for the girls’ team this season is his daughter, senior Courtney Ricks, who won the 55-meter hurdles on Wednesday with a time of 8.73 seconds, which he said is one of the top times in the state at the Group 4A level.

“This is her first year running the 55-meter hurdles,” Coach Ricks said.

Courtney Ricks will continue to compete in that event, as well as the 300- and 500-meter dashes. She placed second in the 500 on Wednesday with a time of 1:23.34, just behind Phoebus High School sophomore Amira Aduma’s time of 1:22.08.

King’s Fork lost some of the best athletes in the state from last season due to graduation, including state qualifiers Gabrielle Snipes, Danielle Hill, Roneka Spady and Andrew Gould.

“I’d say 90 percent of our team is first-year competitors,” Coach Ricks said.

Another member of the 10 percent, though, is senior Hannah Hinson, who specializes in the shot put. Hinson and Courtney Ricks are going to be driving for state titles this year in their respective events.

Additionally, “I’m thinking that we’re probably going to get our relay teams qualified for state,” Coach Ricks said.

As for King’s Fork’s younger athletes, their prospects should soon become discernible.

“Our new people are developing very quickly, so we’ll see by the end of the month exactly where we are,” Ricks said.
