The Virginia Marine Police dive team was searching a location on the James River Wednesday afternoon for a boater missing since Monday, said Lori Naismith, a spokeswoman for the police agency.

William Johnson, 75, is missing after his boat capsized. The search was suspended due to bad weather after the boat was recovered on Monday.

Naismith said two police boats were out searching with sonar prior to the dive team’s deployment. “The marine police don’t put a dive team in the water unless they have a pretty good indication of what they’re looking at,” she said.

The Virginia Marine Resources Commission, of which the Virginia Marine Police is a division, is leading the recovery efforts.

Johnson is believed to have left shore from the Tyler’s Beach area of Rushmere to check his fishing nets.
