William Wellington Jones

The Hon. William Wellington Jones passed away Jan. 25, 2015. He was born Dec. 30, 1921, to Margaret Wilson Heflin Jones and Roy Jones. He and his sister were the seventh generation of family in Driver. His family was instrumental in the founding of Glebe Episcopal Church in 1738.

He is survived by his daughter, Mary Margaret Jones, and his grandson, Francesco Brunno-Bossio. He was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth Hill Jones; his son, William W. Jones Jr.; and his sister, Frances J. Cleveland.
Judge Jones was a 1939 graduate of Chuckatuck High School. He earned both his bachelor’s and law degrees from the College of William & Mary, where he belonged to the Kappa Sigma fraternity. He served three years in the U.S. Navy in World War II.
Two years after starting his law practice in Suffolk in 1947, Judge Jones became a trial justice for Nansemond County and served until August 1954. He served a number of years as Commonwealth’s Attorney for Nansemond County. He was Suffolk’s first city attorney after the merger with Nansemond County in 1974 and later was appointed to the Suffolk General District Court bench in 1978, serving until he retired in 1991.
Judge Jones was committed to many fraternal, benevolent and religious organizations: the Ruritan Club, the Lions Club, the Tom Smith Camp No. 1702, Sons of Confederate Veterans, and the American Legion Post No. 57 of Suffolk. He was a founding member and the first president of Suffolk-Nansemond Historical Society, and a vestryman and trustee of Glebe Episcopal Church.
Judge Jones loved history and was highly valued as a historian of the city of Suffolk and Nansemond County.
A memorial Holy Eucharist honoring the life of Judge Jones will be held at Glebe Episcopal Church, 4400 Nansemond Parkway, Suffolk, by the Rev. Ross F. Keener on Monday, Feb. 2, 2015, at 1 p.m.
