Suffolk nets two winners in Elks Hoop Shoot

Two Suffolk boys emerged as winners at the Virginia Elks Southeast District Hoop Shoot hosted by Suffolk Elks Lodge No. 685 on Jan. 18 at King’s Fork Recreation Center.

Twenty-six contestants, boys and girls from ages 8 to 13, participated in the free throw contest, and they represented Elks lodges in Petersburg, Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Hampton, Newport News, Onancock and Suffolk.
The contestants were divided into three age divisions for boys and three for girls, and each youth took 25 shots. Those making the most won their divisions.
Suffolk’s Mason Beddingfield won the 12- to 13-year-old boys division, while Hayden Jones of Suffolk was the victor in the 8- to 9-year-old boys division.
Along with the other division winners on Jan. 18, they will advance to participate in the state-level competition of the Hoop Shoot in Charlottesville on Feb. 8.

Beddingfield and Jones will look to follow in the footsteps of Suffolk’s Theodore Wheeler, who was a state champion in the event back in 2011.
Everyone participating on Jan. 18 reached the district level by winning his or her local contest.

- 8-9 year old girls: 1st-Miranda O’Connor (Virginia Beach Lodge No. 2268); 2nd-Viola Martins (Suffolk Lodge No. 685); 3rd-Kayana Cloud (Newport News Lodge No. 315)
- 8-9 year old boys: 1st-Hayden Jones (Suffolk Lodge No. 685); 2nd-Qmar McLeod (Petersburg Lodge No. 237); 3rd-Marcello Rosanova (Onancock Lodge No. 1766)
