Wins were hard to come by this season for the young Suffolk Christian Academy girls’ basketball team, but it experienced a win of a different kind to end the year when the All-Hampton Roads Athletic Conference honors were recently announced.

Lady Knights junior forward/guard Brianna Farrenkopf made the all-conference second team.

“I thought it was fantastic,” SCA coach Tom Powell said. “I mean, it was encouraging to not only me, but to her, as well, and to the entire team.”

Only 12 players are selected by the coaches of conference teams for All-HRAC honors, six on the first team and six on the second team.

Powell said that based on his team’s record, which was 1-21 overall and 0-12 in the conference, you would think there was nothing to celebrate.

“However, the coaches in the conference thought different,” he said.

As to what stood out to them about Farrenkopf, Powell said, “When Brianna was on her game, she was on her game. She would drop 15, 17 points, and so I think that’s what it was.”

Looking back over her statistics for the season, Powell said, “Brianna did very well in our conference games.”

During the season, three of her six double-digit scoring games came against conference foes, including a 17-point performance against Summit Christian Academy during the recent HRAC tournament.

Farrenkopf turned in standout performances in several non-conference contests, as well. She recorded a season-high 18 points against the Hampton Roads Cougars and poured in 16 points during the Lady Knights’ only win of the season, a 53-13 rout of Alliance Christian Academy.

She led her team in scoring for the 2014-15 campaign, averaging 6.5 points per game. Her second team selection was her first career all-conference honor.

Though sophomore forward Julia Powell did not receive an all-conference selection, she was nominated, largely on the strength of her ability to block shots, which she did 88 times this season.

“The fact that she was a conference leader in shot blocks was impressive,” Coach Powell said.

He added he was looking forward to having both Farrenkopf and Powell back next year, giving him something to work with on both sides of the ball.

The Lady Knights closed the year out with positive performances against Great Bridge Christian Academy and Summit Christian.

Coach Powell said both opposing coaches in the last two games said to him, “You really made us earn this one.”

He hopes to be able to take that momentum into the 2015-16 season with a squad of mostly returning players.

“I think we’ll be able to make some good steps,” he said.
