PORTSMOUTH — Arthur C. “Art” Mayo Jr., 80, a lifelong resident of Portsmouth, passed away on May 23, 2015. He was predeceased by his parents, Dorothy and Lemuel Gregory. He retired after 45 years with the government. Art was a member of Berea Christian Church in Driver. He had a love of sports, and it showed through his many years of coaching and volunteering for the Churchland Football League and Churchland and Bennett’s Creek Softball Leagues. After retirement, Art gave special time reading to the children at the AC Center in Portsmouth. On Thursdays, he would be up working the breakfast shift at the Oasis Center. Art enjoyed the weekly meetings while serving as a member of the Merrimac and Portsmouth Kiwanis Clubs. His stories of working at Coleman’s Nursery during the holidays always made him smile.

Art is survived by his wife, Joan Parsons Mayo; children, Katherine Mayo, Michael Shawn Mayo (Jimmi), Diane Parsons, Cindy Oliver (Randy) and Ken Parsons. He will be greatly missed by his nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, who thought he was a special “Pop,” and you could certainly tell he loved them all.

The funeral service will be held in the funeral home at 3 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens, Shoulders Hill Road, Suffolk. A reception will follow at Berea Christian Church, Driver. A special thank you to his nurses at Bon Secours Nursing and Therapy Center for their care, his doctors and nurses in the ICU for their love and compassion. Our family praises you for the undaunted work you do. Contributions may be made to CHKD. www.SturtevantFuneralHome.com.
