Police increased patrols around bus stops in Suffolk on Tuesday after a high-school student reported being approached by a man who offered her a ride and a meal.

According to city spokesman Tim Kelley, the Nansemond River High School student reported that a black man about 40-50 years old drove up in a tan Chevrolet Blazer and asked her if she would like a ride to school.

He had a gray beard and was wearing a red shirt, Kelley said. The incident happened near the bus stop at Old College Drive and Camellia Drive.

According to a letter sent from Suffolk Public Schools to students at six elementary, middle and high schools in the area, the man asked the student if she wanted a ride and if she wanted to go get something to eat. The girl continued walking toward her bus, boarded the bus and told the driver about the incident.

Police and school officials were notified. In addition to the letter sent home with students, about 5,000 families received a recorded telephone message.

“Please discuss with your child the importance of notifying a bus driver, teacher, administrator or staff member when he/she knows of a situation that could threaten the neighborhood, the bus stop, or the school,” the letter read. “In addition, if you or your child has any knowledge of this possible threat, I ask that you immediately notify the police or an administrator.”
