A five-vehicle crash in the 8700 block of Whaleyville Boulevard shut down the road in both directions on Thursday afternoon.

The crash happened about 2:43 p.m., according to a city press release. It involved four passenger vehicles and a tractor-trailer.

Four patients were transported to Sentara Obici Hospital for treatment of injuries not considered life-threatening.

The roadway reopened to all traffic at 4:20 p.m. The cause remains under investigation.
