Suffolk will receive federal assistance in recovering from Hurricane Matthew, Gov. Terry McAuliffe announced Thursday.

President Barack Obama granted the request for Suffolk, Franklin, Isle of Wight, Southampton, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Norfolk and Virginia Beach, according to a press release from the governor’s office.

The declaration means the city can get money for repairs to critical infrastructure, roads, buildings and equipment. It also provides funds for debris removal and emergency services.

Hurricane Matthew struck Virginia on Oct. 8-9, dumping 11 inches of rain in a 24-hour period on southeastern Virginia.

“This assistance will help ensure our local and community partners receive the appropriate funds in order to begin a path to full recovery from the severe damage incurred by Hurricane Matthew,” McAuliffe stated in a press release. “I want to thank President Obama, FEMA, our Virginia Department of Emergency Management team and all local government officials for their accelerated coordination in this declaration.”

Suffolk reported damages of nearly $1.2 million resulting from the hurricane, with most of that total coming from $912,000 worth of damage to city roads and bridges.

The declaration differs from the individual assistance program, which provides financial aid to citizens and businesses recovering from the hurricane. Chesapeake, Norfolk, Virginia Beach and Newport News have been approved for individual assistance, but Suffolk has not.

A second request has been made by the Virginia Department of Emergency Management for Suffolk as well as Isle of Wight, Portsmouth, Hampton and York County.
