King’s Fork High School had two softball players — Cali Hinnant and Madison Froemel — make the 4A East All-Region team.

Froemel, a junior, made the first team. Hinnant, a freshman, made the second team. Both girls also made the Conference 17 teams.

Froemel had a solid game for the Lady Bulldogs in their 4A East semifinals loss. She accounted for three of the team’s four hits and their only score.

Suffolk has sent four teams to state championships this year, and King’s Fork’s softball team almost made it, as well, knocked out in a tough 2-1 loss to Powhatan High School in the semifinals. One play could have changed the Lady Bulldogs’ season and given them the opportunity to play for a 4A title.

“I’m proud of the girls,” coach Richard Froemel said. “Good teams play their best ball at the end of the season, and that is what we did. We sent our seniors off, but our underclassmen are using the loss as motivation.”

King’s Fork finished the season 12-11. In half of the 11 losses, the Lady Bulldogs felt they played well enough to have won.

Even though she is only a freshman, Hinnant made an immediate impact for the Lady Bulldogs. She pitched all but eight innings this year. Her work throughout the year earned her a place on the conference first team.

“The sky is the limit for her,” Froemel said. “With the work ethic she has, she will only get better.”

Though the Lady Bulldogs will be graduating some productive seniors, Froemel is confident about what he has returning.
