Summer fitness classes planned

There are a number of exciting events and activities scheduled at the East Suffolk Recreation Center, located at 138 S. Sixth St., to keep you healthy and fit all summer long.

Core Blast Class — Are you still interested in achieving your fitness and health goals for the New Year? Try the Core Blast fitness class, a 30-minute conditioning class that focuses on increasing flexibility, improving cardio endurance and strengthening back and abdominal muscles.

It’s not too late to come and join. Classes are open to all fitness level participants ages 16 and older and are scheduled through Aug. 24 on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5 to 5:30 p.m. The class is free with a fitness membership and has a $4 walk-in fee.

Dance Fusion — Looking for a way to break through that plateau or interested in changing up your stale fitness routine? Try the Dance Fusion group exercise class. Dance Fusion is a fitness program that blends explosive dance music and boot camp body toning. This isn’t your typical dance class. With simple, easy-to-follow choreography you will be able to focus more on working out instead of the dance steps. If you can do movements like squats or jumping jacks, then you will have a blast in this class.

These classes are open to participants ages 16 and older and are scheduled on Tuesdays through Aug. 22 from 6 to 7 p.m. The cost is $5 per drop-in class. Please bring water and a towel.

H.I.I.T. to be Fit — Have you reached a plateau in your current workout and looking for a change from your normal fitness routine? Look no further. This full-body, 30-minute class alternates between short bouts of high-cardio intervals and longer, slower intervals of recovery. High-intensity interval training (H.I.I.T.) helps in lowering body fat, increasing strength and endurance, and toning your body. The H.I.I.T. to Be Fit class will be held every Monday and Wednesday from 6:15 to 6:45 a.m. and from 4:30 to 5 p.m., through Aug. 18. This program is $4 per class for drop-in participants. Purely Pilates — Interested in relieving stress and tension from your body, but want to achieve a great abdominal workout all at the same time? If so, try this 30-minute, full-body Purely Pilates class that will develop your core strength, flexibility, balance and stamina. Purely Pilates not only focuses on building overall stability and strength but also educates participants on breathing awareness, body balancing and posture alignment. All members ages 16 and older can join every Wednesday and Friday through Aug. 11 from 8:30 to 9 a.m. The class is free for fitness members and $5 per class for non-fitness members.

Active Adult Aerobics Class — Active adults are invited to get healthy and fit with the Active Adult Aerobics class. This class focuses on floor aerobics, which may help to increase your mobility, balance, strength and flexibility. Instruction includes stretching, general conditioning, step aerobics and toning to help keep yourself in shape or to help get yourself back into condition. You can enjoy exercising at your own pace while socializing with others. Classes are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 to 11 a.m. The cost is $12 per session. This class is a great way to maintain or start your healthy and fit lifestyle.

Boot Camp Blast — Get in shape with the Bootcamp Blast fitness class, a total body workout that focuses on flexibility, strength and aerobic fitness with variety and fun. This is a great way to challenge your regular fitness routine, achieve a full body workout and have fun. All fitness levels are welcome to join. Classes will be held on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 6:15 to 7:15 a.m. through Aug. 24 and is open to those 16 and older. The class is free with a fitness membership or drop-in cost of $5. Participants are encouraged to bring water and a towel.

Youth Fitness Boot Camp — Calling all kids and teens. Come and join the high energy, fun-filled Youth Fitness Boot Camp class. We will be focusing on increasing overall health and fitness level of children ages 7 to 15 years old through body weight exercises, resistance bands, circuits, fitness games and so much more. The Youth Fitness Boot Camp is held on Tuesdays and Thursdays through Aug. 10 from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Class is free with annual youth membership and $5 drop-in fee for non-members. Youth Strength and Conditioning — Are you an active teen who wants to prepare for the upcoming athletic season and recreational leagues? Then come and join our Youth Strength and Conditioning classes that will help develop coordination, strength, mobility and stability. Youth Strength and Conditioning is opened to youth and teens ages 11 to 18 years old. Class will be held Mondays and Wednesdays through Aug. 10 from 10 to 11 a.m. Cost for this program is $15 for youth and teen members; drop-in cost for non-members is $5 per class.

Young at Heart Fitness — All age 50 and up are invited to join this 30-minute exercise class. Young at Heart Fitness is a total-body workout that focuses on improving coordination and balance for everyday tasks, increasing flexibility, joint stabilization and muscular strength. Young at Heart Fitness will be held Mondays and Fridays, through Aug. 25 from 11 a.m. to noon. This class is appropriate for all fitness levels, and registration is free for Senior Recreation members, or $2 drop-in cost for non-members.

Mind, Body and Yoga — interested in working on your posture, stability and alignment within a relaxing environment? If so, come for six weeks of Mind, Body and Yoga class. This traditional yoga class includes learning a variety of poses that will improve your flexibility, strength, balance and relaxation while focusing on breathing. Mind, Body and Yoga is for individuals 16 years and older and will be held every Tuesday and Thursday through Aug. 8 from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Classes are $12 per session for members or $5 per class drop-in fee for non-members.

Fitness Assessments and Workout Plan — Are you ready to make lifestyle changes and improve your health? This assessment will identify training needs, current fitness levels and personal health and wellness goals. After completing a fitness assessment, recreation center staff can work with you to design a personalized exercise plan focusing on flexibility, balance, core, muscular strength and cardiorespiratory health. Staff will guide you through your first exercise session on proper form, technique and body alignment.

Fitness Assessment and Workout plans are by appointment only and are held at the East Suffolk Recreation Center or Whaleyville Community Center. Both services are free with a current fitness membership.

Small Group Personal Training — This class is for participants who are looking for an effective workout that is designed to develop, challenge or advance their fitness skills and personal health goals. Small Group Personal Training is an emerging fitness trend that combines personalized instruction within a fun, motivating and interactive group setting. Get a free assessment and sign up with your friends/family for our training program. Small group personal trainings are open to fitness members 16 years and older. Certified Personal Trainers create programs that accommodate all fitness levels. Cost for the training is $7 per hour for each group session, with two to six members.

Personal Training — Do you have fitness goals and aren’t sure how to reach them? Let Certified Personal Fitness Trainers develop a plan that will help you lose weight, gain strength or simply be your motivation to accomplishing your goals. Personal Fitness Training sessions are by appointment only during regular hours. Participants must have a current fitness membership and be 16 years or older. Costs for personal training session are only $10 per hour, or receive a discount with our personal training package of 10 one-hour exercise sessions for only $90.
