Bulldogs sticking to process

The volleyball season has been a tough one for the Bulldogs, but they know things will start looking up if they stick with the development process.

The Southeastern District possesses some talented volleyball teams, and King’s Fork High School coach Rick Hite knew that coming into the season. So far this season, the Bulldogs have yet to come up with a win, but it isn’t because of lack of effort. Actually, the Bulldogs have been enjoying the process of getting better. Building chemistry and experience among each other will benefit the Bulldogs in the long run.

“I’m proud to say that the enthusiasm is even greater now than it was at the beginning of the season,” Hite said. “That says a lot about the kids and their passion and their ability just to compete. I am super proud of that.”

Everyday Hite and his team learn something new. They learn things from their opponents, from the way that they operate to the way they make certain plays successful. Hite said he doesn’t know how long it will take for a win to show in the column, but the team knows they are getting better. When the Bulldogs first started, it was even a struggle for the team to get the ball over the net. That’s how much they appreciate the progress they have made since the beginning of the season, and they feel they are due for a win.

“No disrespect to any other teams but we feel like we could have gotten a win or two already,” Hite said. “From a competitive standpoint, we are all itching to get a win, but we are cool with putting up our best effort and living with what happens.”

Hite refers to the team building experience and their skills to “getting more hours on the job.” He knows that as time goes on, his team will eventually start to get better and reach its potential. They understand that sometimes success just does not happen as fast as they want it to. Going forward, Hite just wants his team to continue to attack.

“We want to continue to go full throttle,” he said. “We want to always keep attacking. We have to stay in attack mode. Normally the teams that stay in attack mode and use each other the best most times come out with a win. We are getting better at that.”

There have been bright spots throughout the season. Junior Kevin Williams is one of them. Williams hadn’t played volleyball before until this season, and Hite has seen him grow into a valuable player for the team.

“He has come out and started every game for us,” Hite said. “Every set he is doing different things for us, and for us to rely on him for something the way that we do, it’s impressive by him.”

The Bulldogs know in the game of volleyball they can’t get too low or too high off of a point score or even a set lost. They just want to continue to work and hard and trust that the wins will come.

King’s Fork will play Oscar Smith High School on the road at 7 p.m. Thursday.
