Hoffler Creek plans fall events

Seasonal fun will close out October at the Hoffler Creek Wildlife Preserve, while November begins with a tasty fundraiser.
Visitors are invited to stop by 4501 Twin Pines Road in Portsmouth on Oct. 29 for the preserve’s annual Fall Festival, a free and safe trick-or-treating extravaganza.
Children dressed in their favorite costumes — no masks — will enjoy a scavenger hunt on a trail decorated with skeletons, spiders and other spooky surprises. Organizations like Nature’s Nanny Wildlife Rehabilitation of Chesapeake will have ambassador animals, along with numerous crafts and activities.
Parents and their children will hop on a hayride around Lake Ballard, or check out the preserve’s new Little Free Library.

The event will be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and show children the fun of nature, said James Bussey, Hoffler Creek Wildlife Preserve Foundation executive director.
“It’s becoming increasingly difficult to inspire our kids to enjoy and engage with nature,” Bussey said. “This is an opportunity for us to do that.”
On Nov. 4, older visitors will have their own fun at the fourth annual oyster roast and barbecue.
Attendants will enjoy live music as they drink locally brewed craft beer and taste roasted oysters and Rodman’s barbecue. There will also be a silent auction and cornhole.
The fundraiser will be from 1 to 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $50 per person, and proceeds will benefit the foundation’s efforts towards environmental education, research and stewardship.
“It’s just a good time to have a couple of beers and enjoy nature,” Bussey said.
