A jury deliberated for less than an hour Wednesday before finding a Suffolk man guilty of a 2016 homicide.

Karlton Boone Jr., 20, shot 42-year-old Wayne Watford because he owed him $80, according to Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney Tom Shaia, who prosecuted the case along with Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney Matthew Glassman.

Watford’s body was found in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery on Dill Road on March 1, 2016. Shaia said Watford was shot twice in the back and had a third wound from a grazing shot to his head.

Boone was found guilty of first-degree murder, use of a firearm in commission of a felony and shoot, stab, cut or wound in commission of a felony.

Watford’s family, including a son who traveled from Oklahoma, was present during the entire trial, which began Monday, Shaia said. During the sentencing phase of the trial, the family members discussed the loss they have experienced since Watford’s death.

The jury deliberated for an additional 20 minutes and fixed Boone’s punishment at a total of 38 years. The maximum punishment would have been life plus eight years.
