Memorial Day is a time to honor those who lost their lives while serving in the U.S. military, and this year, the holiday lands on May 28.

Two ceremonies will be held in Suffolk to honor those who died. One will be held at Cedar Hill Cemetery and the other will be held at the Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery.

The Cedar Hill ceremony is hosted by the American Legion Norman R. Matthews Post 57 from 11 a.m. to noon with guest speaker Capt. Gavin Duff.

Duff is a graduate of the Naval Academy and has since served in multiple aviation squadrons for the Navy. During Duff’s naval career, he has been the recipient of multiple aviation and leadership awards, including his most recent award, the Vice Admiral James Bond Stockdale Award for Inspirational Leadership in 2014.

Duff is currently the Chief Service Joint Training and U.S. Central Command Desk Officer at Joint Staff in Suffolk.

Cedar Hill, located on the east side of North Main Street near its intersection with Mahan Street, is the burial site for many Confederate generals and veterans from both world wars, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.

The American Legion Post 88, the Horton Wreath Society, the Patriot Guard Riders and the Tidewater Tidal WAVES of Hampton Roads partnered with the Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery to put together their Memorial Day ceremony.

The ceremony will begin at 9 a.m. During the ceremony, they will be placing memorial wreaths throughout the cemetery, which is located at 5310 Milners Road.

Gerald Rhoads will be the keynote speaker for the event. Rhoads was the past commander of the Department of Virginia’s American Legion.

Gerald Soucheray will give the welcome, and music will be played by Sarah Smith and Allen Hall Jr. from Bugles Across America.

Both events are free and open to the public.
