A Saturday of dance at North Suffolk Library

Anyone with an urge to step and move this weekend can join others for a free Day of Dance this Saturday at the North Suffolk Library, 2000 Bennetts Creek Park Road.

The Day of Dance will begin with a Step Studio from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in which all ages can participate in lessons featuring a different dance style every hour. No experience or partner is required, but comfortable clothes and shoes are recommended for each 45-minute session.

“It’s part of our (Camp SPL’s) Sizzling Saturdays,” Suffolk Public Library assistant Frances Jornov said. “We were trying to go with the idea that when you go to a summer camp, towards end of your time at the camp, there’s a dance.”

“We also wanted to provide an event for the community that would be free, all ages and something that people wouldn’t ordinarily have the opportunity to do,” added Community Services Librarian Matthew Thompson.

Participants can try Latin-style dancing at 11 a.m. and ballroom style at noon with Walter and Judy Schultz of Two Step Tidewater. An instructor from Kelli’s Dance Explosion of Chesapeake, or KDX, will teach hip-hop moves at 1 p.m. The Studio will close with line dancing taught by Amanda Terkanian with the YMCA of South Hampton Roads at 2 p.m.

The North Suffolk Library will keep stepping from 6 to 8:30 p.m. with a Summer Dance Soiree for everybody, regardless of if they participated in the Step Studio. People are encouraged to dress in their best for this Hollywood-themed evening with light refreshments, a crafting table for make-your-own corsages and boutonnieres and a photo booth with plenty of props.

Thompson will be doing the honors of DJ’ing all the hits. He said that other than high school proms, there aren’t a lot of opportunities for people to enjoy fun, community-oriented dancing.

“We wanted the people of Suffolk to have the time and space to cut a rug,” he said.
