Searching for Suffolk Peanuts

The Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts is looking for community volunteers to help bring the Peanuts gang to Suffolk community theater, with “You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown” set for May by the Suffolk Players.

Cast auditions will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Feb. 26-27 at the Suffolk Center, 110 W. Finney Ave. The roles are lovable loser Charlie Brown, his dog Snoopy and his little sister Sally Brown, bossy Lucy van Pelt, her little brother Linus and piano-playing Schroeder.

The community is also encouraged to volunteer for behind-the-scenes roles like stage design, stage management, makeup, costumes and tech support, according to Education Coordinator Gavin Harper.

Participants should be ages 16 and up. Each participant should prepare no more than two minutes of a musical-theater style song that shows a strong understanding of the character, while also fitting the style of the original play.

An accompanist and CD player will be available. A cappella auditions will not be considered. There will be a dance portion, so participants should wear comfortable clothes and shoes.

The production will be directed by Jeff Johnson, who has done various roles in more than 50 theater productions since his start at Lakeland High School. He currently serves as the president of the board of directors of Smithfield Little Theatre.

According to Harper, when they decided to organize their first community theater performance in years, they wanted a show that would engage the Suffolk community and be manageable, relatable and entertaining.

“Charlie Brown and the Peanuts gang are beloved by so many people,” Harper said. “We just wanted to bring that fun, family show to the Suffolk Center and to Suffolk in general.”

Cast members must be able to commit a significant amount of time, with rehearsals four to five nights weekly, starting in the first week of March. The performances will be May 17-19.
