The King’s Fork High School wrestling team qualified three wrestlers to compete in the Class 4 state tournament.

The Bulldogs competed in the Class 4 Region A championship tournament over the week and were able to come out with state tournament representatives. Gabe Wyatt, Alijah Wyatt and Kirk Bond Jr. were all able to advance to the state tournament. King’s Fork finished ninth as a team.

“We wrestled well the second day, but the first day we took a couple of lumps,” King’s Fork coach Jason Dunaway said. “The guys rose to the occasion. We had a couple of things not go our way, but overall, I felt like those exceeded expectations.”

King’s Fork has taken a strong approach to the state tournament. Dunaway wants his wrestlers to be as relaxed as possible. They worked hard all year and, win or lose, he is confident his guys will give it 100 percent.

“Of course, you have to get there and perform but relax and have fun,” Dunaway said. “It’s the state tournament, but it’s the same as any other tournament. So, get there and have fun this week and let’s continue to push ourselves.”

Most of this week will consist of fine-tuning things. Dunaway and his wrestlers believe anything can happen. For the Wyatt twins, it was a goal they set to improve on their postseason performances from last year. Now, they want to place or bring home a state championship.

The Class 4 state tournament will be held Feb. 15 at Riverside High School in Leesburg.

“We want to go out there to compete and place and close the gap,” Dunaway said. “We want to put our best foot forward and see what happens.”
