The Lakeland High School baseball team picked up its second win against Deep Creek High School Tuesday evening.

For the second time this season, Lakeland took on Deep Creek and was able to squeeze out a 2-1 win at home, the same score as their last win against Deep Creek. Deep Creek got on the board in the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead before Lakeland finally got on the board in the fifth inning to tie the game at one.

“Anytime you get a chance to play against other district opponents, you’re excited about it,” Lakeland Coach David Devers said. “Also, to get a series win is good for the kids to see what they are capable of.”

A walk-off error by Deep Creek led to an opportunity for Nick Cleghorn to score, as Lakeland was able to capitalize on the mistake for the win. Noah Boone and Tyler Spence handled pitching duties; Boone struck out 10 and Spencer closed out the game, getting the win on the mound. Josh Ellis led Lakeland from the plate, going 2-3.

“I think these close games are good for us. It’s showing what we need to do to come back and get those victories,” Devers said. “Down the stretch, this is going to be good for us. Deep Creek is a good team, even though their record might not show it. It’s valuable experience for us, because we can see we go and grind and get wins.”

Lakeland will go on the road Thursday evening to take on a tough Grassfield High School team.
