The Suffolk Chapter of the Links, Incorporated honored local hospital workers as “lifesavers” this week.

Several members of the group were at Sentara Obici Hospital on Tuesday to present staff from the intensive care unit and emergency department with rolls of Lifesavers, as well as a thank-you letter and written prayer for the workers.

The candy — a total of 760 rolls — was also given to staff at Bon Secours Mercy Health Southampton Memorial Hospital and staff at the Main Street Walmart in Suffolk. Other businesses like pharmacies and grocery stores also received letters of recognition in the mail.

Chapter President Duanne Hoffler-Foster said the initiative “came from the heart.”

“The ‘lifesaver’ is symbolic of their lifesaving efforts, and the ‘prayer’ is symbolic of our support for them,” she said. “We want them to know they are dear to us. We love them, and they are in our prayers always.”

Jacqueline Chavis, another member of the chapter, said the goal was to recognize front-line workers.

“They are carrying the weight of this pandemic in ways many of us can’t imagine,” Chavis said. “We appreciate all they do daily to be there when others can’t or won’t.”
